Commercializing research to deliver solutions

Throughout his distinguished career, Carl has focused on unique projects that have a lasting impact on the construction industry, and help companies become more efficient and profitable. His research has been commercialized to deliver solutions to real-world problems. For example, using 3D imaging and automated sensing algorithms to create digital twins of constructed facilities that can be used to automate construction management applications; and developing radio-frequency identification tags and algorithms to locate items on the construction site quickly and easily.

Carl is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Waterloo. Over the last 30 years, he has held nearly 100 significant grants and contracts worth approximately $28M of funding. He has received numerous research and teaching awards, and serves on a number of editorial boards and on professional committees for organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada and the International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction (IAARC).

“My research and work have been centered around a desire to make a substantial contribution towards a better quality of life for all,” says Carl. “AECO is undertaking work that I have long been interested in, and I’m very pleased to be joining the Board of Advisors where I will have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to improve the architecture, engineering and construction ecosystem.”

Leveraging digital technology to improve the bottom line

In addition to the academic sector, the AECO BoA also includes industry leaders from the public and private sectors. Board members each specialize in areas that range from architecture, engineering and construction to real estate, business, finance and change strategy. Together, the BoA is focused on identifying ways to leverage digital technology to transform and improve the entire architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) value chain.

According to Arash Shahi, CEO of AECO, “I have known and admired Carl for many years and am very proud to welcome him to the AECO Board of Advisors. His knowledge and research are perfectly aligned with AECO’s research and development vertical. I’m looking forward to working with him on the important projects that we will be undertaking to improve the way industry, government and financial partners work together to better our built environment and improve the bottom line for all stakeholders.”
